IT'S ALWAYS SUCH A PROJECT: Just Give It a Turn

I have to admit that I wasn't too excited when Joe came back from a buying trip with 5 of these glass cubes in tow. For some reason, filling containers just isn't my forte. After a couple of failed attempts, I remembered something I learned in art class long ago -- when all else fails, squint or turn. We'll talk about squint another time. Turn was today's hero!

Sometimes, the key to a creative solution is just to turn the piece in a different direction -- on its side maybe, or in this case, upside down. Joe cut some simple bases and voila -- mini-show cases! Check out our friend Rosemary's little turn-around on her blog for another idea along this same line. Have a project you'd like to share? MIDLAND REPORT

Wow! Things were hoppin' last Saturday at Midland in Indy, and the staff reports that it's been a daily occurrence. Yeah! Popular sentiment says that it's due to the upcoming Superbowl. Hmmm. Maybe I will have to become a football fan, after all.

READING LIST

I just finished Ann Voskamp's "One Thousand Gifts," which was a birthday present last year from one of my favorite cousins. Beautifully written, it would be a good companion to the "Happiness Project." Following a friend's suggestion, Voskamp begins a listing of every "gifts," small moments of happiness that might be easily overlooked. Her simple list yields some amazing results. Definitely recommended. What's on your nightstand?

I've decided that I may have to limit myself to one post a week, if I'm going to keep up with all my New Year's blogging goals. I've really had a great time visiting blogs, so I think I'm on the right track. I've started just going down our blog roll, visiting those sites and the sites they like. Second Installment: Everything's SUCH a Project, Grayslake Report, More to Read, Random Thoughts

I was tickled to get such a nice response to our new feature, Everything's SUCH a Project. Yeah!! Sounds like everyone loves to get creative. So here's another idea, similar to the last but somewhat easier. Joe and I, and I know many of you, love the industrial look. Whenever boxes of mold patterns are available at a reasonable price, we always snap them up:

Many times, these molds are terrific just displayed on their own as little pieces of art. But they also make terrific bases for any number of projects. Case in point, these funky Valentine photo holders. One of my favorite guilty pleasures is thrifting, and I always scoop up wire clip stands when I see them. So just combine the two, molds plus wires. A little drilling, a little glue, and you have it! You can also make the holders from 16 to 18 gauge wire, if you have a hard time finding them ready to go.

Nice thing about these, too, is that while they are great for the holiday, they can be used any time. That's my favorite kind of decoration!

GRAYSLAKE REPORT

Many thanks to all who came out to support the Grayslake (IL) Antique Market over the weekend. I don't know if you noticed, but our look has been a little different at the last few shows. A little more urban, a little more funky. We've been having fun with it, and the response has been positive. We decided at the beginning of last year that we need to cast our product net a little wider, so shopping some different venues has resulted in some new looks for us. Stay tuned

BOOK REPORT

I am just finishing Suzanne Collins' YA novel, "The Hunger Games." What a page turner. It kind of makes "Lord of the Flies" seem quaint. The premise is that in the not too distant future, North America as we know it no longer exists. It has been resettled into Panem, a wealthy central city supported by 12 impoverished outlying districts. In retaliation for a failed rebellion, the districts are required every year to choose 1 boy and 1 girl by lottery. The contestants come to the capital, are fed, groomed and trained, then turned loose in an arena to fight to the death on live television. Chilling. Shirley Jackson times 24. But the story also asks some larger questions. Give it a try.

RANDOM THOUGHTS

I will only be posting once this week. No show, but getting appointment stuff ready, plus Midland and Mishawaka. Still trying to catch up from the holidays, too. Yikes. "Everything's SUCH a PROJECT," plus Grayslake Preview and Coupon

Another blogging resolution for the new year is to share more about the projects we love to create. We are planning to make "It's Always SUCH a PROJECT" a regular feature. I'm not sure how the creative process works for you, but would love it if you'd share a comment and tell me. For me, it generally starts with an awesome group of parts, like those pictured below.

We bought this box of partially dismantled vintage store displays at Allegan last summer. I already used some of the parts this fall, but wanted to come up with a project for some of what remained.

Problem was, we were missing some critical pieces to actually get the parts to work together again -- some things needed bases, others needed dowels or connectors. It was Joe, Argos Hardware and our scrap metal pile to the rescue, with the happy result pictured below. Our vintage stands are now ready for photos, memos or some other little lovely.

Yet another blogging resolution was to include more book titles, as we always get lost of feedback on what we're reading. I don't think I used this one last year, but it was my favorite book for 2011:

It's the story of researcher from Minnesota's journey to find a lost colleague. While that might not sound very compelling, all I can say is READ IT for yourself! It is beautifully written. Totally convincing. So what's on your night stand? Do tell. xo

Something Special

One thing I like about the start of a new year is writing goals. Yes, I am just that geeky. I also enjoy making lists and crossing things off, but that is another story. One of my goals for this year is to be a better citizen in the blogging universe. One way I'm going to try and do this is visiting other blogs more consistently, leaving comments and sharing links. And I have a great link for you today -- something really special!

But before I share it with you, take a look at this lovely graphic, just one of many pages from a book I bought at last month's Expo Show. I framed a bunch of them for this past weekend; while working with them, I was surprised to see that this beautiful writing was actually part of a tutorial (circa 1890) for BLACKBOARD WRITING! Wow. The link I want to share with you is the website of Dana Tanamachi, a contemporary graphic designer and customer chalk letterer from Brooklyn, New York. Ms. Tanamachi specializes in chalkboard art -- everything comes full circle! You are really in for a treat. Be sure to watch one of the time-lapse videos of her creating a piece. It is simply amazing! Many thanks to my pal Glenda Goins, Mishawaka Antiques, for sharing the link with me.

So how was your New Year? We had a great show at the DuPage Expo Center. Zurkos reported that it was their BIGGEST gate to date for this event. Many thanks to all who came out to support the show. Today, I am off to restock at Mishawaka and then shop for Grayslake. We got 12 inches of snow last night, so that should make things more interesting! A Slightly Victorian Christmas Wish from Our Place to Yours

For the last couple of years, we've collected these cute Victorian postcards featuring Christmas robins. I kept expecting a project to materialize, but so far, that hasn't happened. But looking through them the other day, the thought occurred to me that robins seem a little out of place at Christmastime. Even in Victorian England, it must have been chilly! So I decided to do a little quick Internet research, and I totally get it now!

It turns out that to the Victorians, robins symbolized "light at the darkest time of year" -- even with snow on the ground, the hope of spring is right around the corner! It is one of the things I love best about that time period -- every little detail was packed with meaning.

So from our place to yours this holiday week, we wish you everything a Victorian Robin stands for: new beginnings, cheer, joviality, light-heartedness, joy, hope, clarity, renewal, pleasures, simplicity, happiness, satisfaction, rejuvenation, contentment and a bright future!

Feeling Merry? A Short List of Reasons Why

Today, I have a to-do list that is long as my arm -- or at least elbow to fingertip! But I'm feeling distracted. I guess you could say actually merry. Downright full of Christmas cheer. Do you ever have days like that? Where you just feel full of good fortune?

Partly, I think it is due to lack of this:

Now, don't get me wrong. I love a white Christmas as much as the next girl. But every day that I don't have to drive in it, I count as a blessing. Cold but sunny weather drew a big crowd of shoppers to last weekend's Grayslake Antique Market, which we always count as a blessing. And everyone was in a great mood -- another reason to celebrate!

Many thanks to everyone for braving the gloomy weather last weekend to come and see us at Kane. Saturday started out a little too quiet, but picked up as the morning went on and cold rain let up. Holiday handmades were big sellers, as were smalls. Not much furniture, but that is kinda typical for the time of year. Sunday was steady. We enjoyed visiting with our new neighbors and hope they will be back when the season re-opens at Kane in March. xo

Pipe (Leg Table) Dreams and the Last Kane of the Year

In just a few short years, industrial pieces have gone from easy-to-buy but more selective to sell to the exact opposite -- prices have skyrocketed and finds are in hot demand at all our markets.

Thankfully Joe is a whiz at creative carpentry, allowing us to make some wonderful pieces from parts that we find. Case in point, this great pipe-leg table.

We found the legs on a buying trip a few weeks ago, and Joe remembered that we had a lovely original-paint top from an earlier auction score. What great patina!

A match made in industrial/garden/primitive heaven! The piece would be awesome in a store, as a worktable, in an office, as a buffet...so many options.

Need a Simple Gift? Plus Expo Report

Need a simple gift that's fun to make? How about an embellished eraser? Anyone with a chalkboard can use it! What you'll need: scissors, Tacky Glue, straight pins, brush, fabric or paper, eraser, pencil. Now, the eraser might actually be the tricky part. We order ours from the local office supply store. (Order some chalk while you are at it!) You might also try on-line. Once that problem is solved, the rest is easy. Remove the label and place the eraser upside down on your fabric or paper. Trace leaving about a 1/4 inch extra on each side.

Cut out along traced lines, then brush top of eraser with glue. Cover evenly. Smooth your fabric or paper over the glue, then brush some additional adhesive on your 1/4 inch margins. Fold edges like you are wrapping a package and pin in place 'til dry. That's it! You can now use your imagination to embellish your eraser -- buttons, stray earrings, keys -- whatever you like. And add a little strip of trim around the edges to cover the sides.

That's all there is to it! No time for this? No worries! We are planning to stock these from now on! Come get one from us anytime.

Small Business Saturday; EXPO SHOW Update

Here at rhubarb reign, we LOVE all our retail customers -- boutique owners from five states who not only keep us in business, but never cease to dazzle us with their individual creative vision. How can you not love a wonderful shop, carefully edited, full to the brim with eye candy and excellent ideas?

We heartily endorse Small Business Saturday, coming up this weekend. Remember as you are planning your holiday shopping to get out and support all your wonderful local businesses!

These photos were taken over the weekend as we restocked SoBo Style, in Columbus, Ohio. Katie has worked her holiday magic all over the store. One of my favorite twists is that so many of the holiday goodies can be used way beyond the Christmas season. Just one example -- Katie already sold an entire window-full of garland to a bride-to-be, who is saving it to use for her June wedding. A little multi-purposing never hurts any one's budget! After the wedding, the newlyweds will be able to use the garland again and again. What a great idea.

Vintage Wrapping Station 101

You can't be in this business long without things tending to, well, accumulate. Actually, if you like vintage stuff at all, it tends to accumulate, business or no! But look how cute it is when it all gets together:

Awwh! So instead of our usual collage table, we thought it would be fun to try a Vintage Wrapping Center at our pre-holiday shows, putting our vintage baubles, trims, paper flowers* and more to good use.
Our Grayslake customers loved it, so we will be restocking for the Expo Show. Come give it a try yourself! It is really great fun to put a special touch on your holiday packages.

Ode to Puttering; Kane County Report; Grayslake Preview

One of my all-time favorite movies is the French comedy, "Amelie." If you've never seen it, stop reading immediately and go rent it. Of course, I fully expect you to get back here and finish reading once you're done!

Now that you've seen it, I can share one of my favorite parts -- the depiction of all the quirky little things the characters like or don't that make them, well, them. Like her father loving to peel long strips of wallpaper. I get that. Although, at the top of my list has to be puttering. Puttering, by my definition, involves working through a long list of chores, but taking as long as you need. Not rushing is the luxury (although I do like to check things off lists...geeky, I know, but you'll understand once you see the movie.)

Puttering is especially joyous when it takes the place of a less exciting task, in today's case, tuckpointing. Both messy and involving standing high up on a ladder...bleck. But the weatherman was helping me out with a little drizzle, so I'm inside, with Starbucks, U2 and scented candles. You know, puttering.

One thing on the list was getting Tuesday's blog post done a day early, which bring me back to writing about rhubarb reign, what I'm supposed to be doing! Thanks to a busy weekend at Kane and Mishawaka Antiques, Joe and I will both be shopping this week, me tomorrow, Joe Wednesday. Good shows are always appreciated, but even more so after an up and down summer (weatherman NOT helping there). Many thanks to all who came out to support both events.

Girls' Weekend Mission: SHOP CHICAGO

Once or twice a year, Joe and I have a free weekend, and it has become tradition for me to spend one of those precious time periods with my excellent friend, Lynda Boyd. And what could be more fun than exploring the great shopping landscape of my favorite city, Chicago!

Our first stop was Scout in Andersonville on the city's northwest side. We surprised owner Larry Vodak -- Larry has been a long-time rhubarb reign customer, but this was our first-ever on-site visit. What a treat. The shop has a relaxed but wonderfully edited feel, full of vintage treasures, artwork and repurposing, all with a clean, contemporary feel. I was so excited to actually get a look at it.

Larry was kind enough to show us all around the store, then drew a map of other must-see spots in the neighborhood.

Next we popped in to say hi to Larry's neighbor Julie Fernstrom, owner of Brimfield. While many of our Chicago customers would remember Julie from Kane and Grayslake, she now has a gorgeous permanent outpost, full to the brim with fabulous textiles and vintage finds. Think lodge, lake, English country house. Julie also does custom upholstery, which has been featured many times in national publications. In fact, the shop's name comes from her signature plaid, not the east coast show.

Julie was excited for us to see her newly opened lounge right above the shop, which is available for private parties. Her next project is a boutique hotel opening soon on the building's third floor. Wow.

Next we cut across the street to hit one of Larry's recommendations, Brownstone, an antique clearing house chock-a-block full of treasures. If I lived in Chicago, I'd definitely be a regular. Check out this great metal cabinet with original wood top that I bought right off their sidewalk:

It will be making its rhubarb reign debut very soon! Just down the street was an outpost of the popular local thrift store chain, the Brown Elephant. The racks were packed with all sorts of vintage treasures, but I had a hard time keeping my eyes off the surroundings. Once upon a time, the building must have been a theater. What a fabulous setting -- crusty, crumbly and oh-so-romantic. Again, if I lived closer, I'd be a regular.

Next, we surprised ourselves by agreeing to be interviewed for HGTV. It took a little longer than expected, because I kept forgetting to insert "HGTV" in to every sentence. Seriously!

Before heading north along Chicago's lakeshore to Evanston for lunch and a peek into Secret Treasures, we stopped in to see another rhubarb reign customer, paper store extraordinaire, Foursided, full of terrific, creative project projects and the raw materials for making them.

After lunch, we headed over to the Grand Street design district. I was dying to see Painted Lady, one of two locations owned by another long-term client, Beth Harlow. It is always super helpful to actually see the store environment. Sometimes what we picture for a particular customer is not exactly on target in terms of look or feel. I made some mental notes before we took a look at the other stores on Beth's block, which had also been written up in a recent Chicago Home and Garden article.

The sun was starting to set as we made our final stop, Greer, a wonderful new (to me) discovery that I read about in a Lucky magazine article on Chicago shops. Another lovely paper store, full of letterpress stationery, ribbon and wrapping. A little Starbucks rounded out our day. To check out Sunday's adventures, take a look at our Facebook page. Fall Break and Zurko's Haunted Halloween Market

A couple times a year, there's an extra weekend in the month, and we don't have a show. That's this weekend, so rri is on fall break! Joe is cleaning out the studio in preparation for winter, plus taking the trailer in for a much-needed paint job. I'm catching up on paperwork, putting final touches on the etsy shop (!) and working on our "big reveal" -- all the new handmades we're been creating for the holidays. Mishawaka Antiques; Tent Sale Details

Joe and I were so pleased to be invited to join Mishawaka Antiques, a lovely new shop in the old downtown section of Mishawaka, Indiana, about 40 minutes north of our home base. Owners Scott and Glenda are real gems -- totally gracious, totally talented, super nice. They felt our area needed a different kind of resource, an antique-based, up-to-the-moment, design friendly shop where customers could find looks they see in shelter magazines. With personal assistance from shopkeepers who "get it." And are happy to help.

The store got such a great response in the first month that they've added on already, taking the space next door as well. I have been in to restock our space every week and have bought a number of things to resell. So what are you waiting for?! Happy Hallow-'Ristmas? Plus Midland, Burlington Update AND Chicago Weekend Shopping Opportunities

I've been feeling kind of outta sync the last few weeks, working on Christmas just as the first leaves were falling outside. Don't get me wrong, I love the holidays, and Christmas handmades are some of my favorite things to create, but I am feeling a little creatively crowded!

Every year, I say that I am going to get started earlier, and this year I actually did! But it was really tricky buckling down and getting things done. Still have lots to do over the next few weeks, so stay tuned for a peek at what we'll be debuting in November!

Now, this is more like it! Normally I try not to post a lot about family stuff on the business' blog, but my son was so proud of his pumpkin that he asked me to share it:

Personally, I was a little worried about the deep-seated pyschological implications of his creation...'til he said it was a design he saw on-line! But, kudos, Jack, on the execution. Puts us right back on the correct seasonal track.

Midland/Burlington Update

Had a busy weekend at Midland and Burlington. The weather was great both days, but windy and running the gamut from mittens-in-the-morning to shorts-by-afternoon. Good crowds, too. A big THANK YOU to everyone for coming out -- especially our pal, Heather, who brought some of her wonderful jewelry to sell and hung out for the day. Can't believe the tent will be packed away now 'til April! But here's to the start of the indoor season.

Burlington Bound

Tomorrow, Joe and I are headed for Burlington, Kentucky, just outside of Cincinnati, for our last outdoor show of the season. Come join us! The Burlington Antique Show is awesome -- one of our favorite places to shop -- and the weather is supposed to be beautiful. Can't wait.

We'll be stopping by Midland to restock on the way. Summer is such a busy time, it's hard for us to get a full shot of new merchandise in there, so tomorrow is key. Are You Pinterest-ed?

Sunday at Grayslake, I was talking with Joan and Emily, two of our pals from EsseMade, about our new love, Pinterest:
Giving credit where credit is due, it was another customer, Carol of Vintage Charm, who originally mentioned it to me. OK, several times. And of course, as with all things tech, it took me a long time to actually take a look. But I have to say, I love it! Not enough yet to start my own board, but it has replaced some of my magazine perusing. Too many of my print friends have folded in the last few years, and Pinterest more than fills the void. Plus it is just so darn easy to use.

If you aren't familiar. do take a look. It is basically a virtual bulletin board where you can "pin" things you like and/or look at images that other people like. It is a great place to jump start creative thinking!

Grayslake Report

As predicated, the weather for Grayslake was LOVELY. So there were lots of outside dealers and a good crowd both days. We just squeaked over the line in meeting our sales goal as the show was closing, and we appreciate everyone who helped us to do just that. Smalls and graphics carried the day. Now we are getting ready for Burlington, our last outdoor show of the season, as well as a trip to restock Midland. Burlington is a great little show, and the weather is supposed to be beautiful. Did I hear ROAD TRIP!! Grab some friends and join us. And for our pals in the Cincinnati area, what are you waiting for? Be sure to come and see us. Thursday is both the best and the worst day for me to take blog-worthy photos. It is the best day to take pictures because we have just finished shopping and sorting for the weekend's event. It is the worst day in that nothing is ready to actually be photographed:

Last Monday I had the good fortune to spend a day shopping in Chicago with one of my most favorite pals in celebration of her upcoming birthday. We started out thrifting on the South Side, then trolling through downtown favorites like P.O.S.H. After lunch, we headed to State Street and the "mothership" of shopping:

Now I must tell you that I totally hate that place. It is so unfair that one store can make me want everything in it! From the yummy housewares and those cute little drawer pulls, to the exquisite selection of books and jewelry. Not to mention the clothes. And the props. I'd be happy to just have some of those. Sigh. Wouldn't it be fascinating to work for them? I'd love to learn a few of their secrets.... I did learn that shopping on someone else's behalf is called "propping," so I'll console myself with knowing that we have that much in common. Here's a peek at some of our latest "propping," on display at last weekend's Kane County Flea Market:

It was a gorgeous weekend and shoppers were out in full force (maybe some were propping, who knows!?) But we still seem to be missing our many of our retailers. Hmmm.

I loved all the fall colors throughout the booth. This is definitely my favorite time of year.

Moving Day and Allegan Report

Hey! We've got some BIG NEWS! rhubarb reign has added a new address -- in addition to our current sales venues listed on the blog's sidebar, we can now also be found at Mishawaka Antiques, located downtown on Lincolnway East in a lovely vintage building. The store is drop-dead gorgeous; we were so pleased when owners Glenda Goins and Scott Wilson contacted us about being part of it! Stop by and take a look. If you aren't familiar with this neck of the woods, Mishawaka is just east of South Bend (we're talkin' Indiana here), which is just south of the Michigan boarder. About 2 hours from Chicago or Indy, if that's helpful.

Here's Joe, getting the infrastructure in place -- vintage doors for backdrop and wooden strips for hanging. Scott and Glenda had the space all prepped for us, and Glenda graciously let us stage in her space while we moved in. Next came the furniture layer:

And finally, all the smalls. Scott was kind enough to come by and get us set up in the computer -- we had three sales already by the end of the day! We also got to meet several other dealers who'd come in to fluff their booths. Everyone's merchandise is swoon-worthy; the offerings run from industrial and primitive, to modern and refined. Don't Read This Post!

If you can't stand a mess. If chaos makes you cringe. If you really prefer things nice and tidy, don't read this post. Avert your eyes. Turn off the computer right now. In fact, RUN AWAY!

That is always my first instinct the first day back at the studio after a show. What a mess! And multiple that by 10 this week, after something a month in the making, like last week's trunk show. Even though we try to be neat, things are always in a jumble. Then begins the weekly ritual we lovingly call "Find the End of the String." Somewhere in this mess, a new load is waiting to be uncovered. At least that's what we tell ourselves!

First we remove anything that will be super time-consuming and look for what needs to be repaired. Then we sort smalls from furniture. Next the furniture is grouped, original paint/natural finish verses needs-to-be-painted. Then comes the Making-of-the-List:

And slowly, ever so slowly, the load begins to emerge. Then we add the finds from this week's shopping, which totally derails the effort for another half-day! Now it is lunchtime Thursday, and we need to get serious. Everyone has their assignments, and groups of finished merchandise start to appear. It always feels something like magic as the load for that weekend's show comes together.

Allegan: It Was the Cat's Meow!

These folk-art cats were two of my favorite recent finds, which we featured this past weekend at the Allegan (MI) Antique Market. The weather couldn't have been better -- with one exception, it has been great this season. But this time it was just perfect antiquing weather -- crisp in the morning, no rain, and warm by afternoon -- but not too hot. You could almost see Fall peeking around the corner.
I was excited that our product mix reflected the seasons changing, moving from summer to fall, with some wonderful reds, great primitives and lots of rusty wire.

Some weeks we just get lucky and the load hangs together really well -- colors and textures balance and there is something for everyone -- painted furniture, primitives, industrial, smalls. That's what we'd like to see every time, but it is harder to achieve than you might guess. That's where Fate plays a hand -- we just have to work with what is there!

We had two spaces this time; our regular neighbors had a conflict, so we rented their space, too. I was cranky Saturday, trying to bend my brain around the new configuration. You don't realize what a pattern you get into with setting up until something changes. But by Sunday, we were pleased. And we had a great time with our regulars and some surprise guests!! Plus we had lovely new neighbors -- Melissa and Todd, with their son, Sam, who were celebrating their anniversary setting up at the market. As if there would be any better way! Although the pace was more leisurely than last month, there was a great crowd. Many dealers were saying that this month and last month were two of the best they've seen. Thanks to all who came out to support the show.

We start getting ready for Kane today, plus will continue working towards our upcoming Trunk Show in Columbus, Ohio (details on both events can be found on the blog's sidebar). Nutty-Nutty-Nut-Nut

My son Jack loves our customer Katie Palmer, even though they have never actually met. The reason being an inside joke. One day, Katie left a message at the house, saying the store had been so busy it was "nutty-nutty-nut-nut." And Jack found that to be delightfully funny. He would repeat it to himself and giggle. Granted he was in second or third grade at the time, but the story stuck. Whenever Katie's name comes up, he smiles, and I know what he's thinking.

Well, Sunday, just after we had unloaded, he would not have been disappointed! Nutty-nutty-nut-nut broke out big time. It was suddenly so busy that we were all helping customers -- and the store wasn't even open yet! Wow! That's what we like to see.

Part of the excitement is due to all the great fall pieces Katie has been receiving. She is already on her second order of Hot Skwash -- lovely velvet pumpkins with real stems -- they've been going right out the door from the back room. They are exquisitely made -- I can't figure out how they do it. I bought a batch last time for my dining room table and more this time to give as gifts.

She's also getting all the seasonal hats, scarves and gloves in, plus loads of new jewelry and other goodies. I had to pace myself -- could have filled the whole van with treasures to take home for myself!

We also spent some time ironing out logistical details for our trunk show, coming up at SoBo next month -- the same weekend that the Country Living Fair is in town. We've been working on merch for about four weeks now, accumulating lots of special pieces that say "fall." Will start posting some photos here and on Facebook over the next few days.

Trunk Show Update; Mindy's Sale; Weekend Plans

Joe and I have been extra busy this month, getting ready for our TRUNK SHOW at SoBo Style in Columbus next month, in addition to our regular round of events.

We are really psyched -- it's been a while since we've done a special event. And special is exactly what we are trying to make this one. The storage is already filling up with a sampling of favorite rhubarb reign projects -- trophies and steampunk flowers from our magazine articles, paper blooms, paperweights, dress forms, crowns, vintage magnets, framed Morris prints are just a few of the goodies stashed away. Plus we've started collecting a lovely grouping of fall furniture -- cottage-style painted and original finish -- plus industrial finds, sap buckets, pumpkin perches , owls and much more. Worth a Thousand Words?

Sometimes I think I've got the whole blogging thing backwards. I tend to think more about what I'm going to write than what I'm going to photograph. Any time I venture into cyberspace I'm struck by the drool-worth wealth of images. But my biggest problem with that is that I'm just too impatient to be a good art director for my blog. Sigh. It generally seems like I'm just too pressed for time to make vignettes and worry about lighting. Double sigh. But I wish that weren't the case!

I did end up taking more pictures than usual Sunday morning before Grayslake re-opened. Now I know that quantity doesn't make up for quality -- still no arty shots or fancy lighting. But it kind of gives the feel of walking through our booth half-way through the show. (And if this isn't enough, you can pop over to our Facebook page for more!)

The show ended up being quite busy on Saturday and steady on Sunday. There was a heavy, but brief, storm Saturday afternoon, but otherwise, the temperatures and weather were lovely. Dare I say even a little on the cool side?! I had to get out my emergency sweater even.

Favorite Finds, Kane Update, Grayslake Coupon

So how's your treasure hunt gone this summer so far? Remember a while back I was talking about the Year of the Hare and making rabbits my summer crush? Well, I'm striking out there big-time! Turns out rabbits are not as common as you'd think and any I find that I like are kinda expensive.
But, never fear, the market gods have not forgotten me! Just last week, Sumaya Seccuro (of Brian-n-Sumaya, whom I'm sure may of you guys know) gave Joe some books that she thought I might be able to use for projects. But this one, the "Cyclopedia of Useful Knowledge," I think I'm going to have to keep. Everything that the pre-Google housekeeper/beekeeper/farmer/business person needs to know! Plus I love the cover.

And I finally broke down and bought this primitive oil painting that I just love. I've looked at it since the beginning of the year, but the dealer was having a 20-percent off sale this month, so I decided that I could take it home. Even though there are no rabbits in it! Many thanks to all who came out for Kane County this past weekend. We ended up having a great show, despite a little heat and an (unexpected) rain shower or two. Once upon a blog; Allegan update; Something just for Lynda

Once upon a time, two antique dealers started a blog. Then something magical happened.

Friends began to appear!

And they brought their friends. And so on. And so forth!

(Translation: Joe and I were struck this weekend by how many connections we've made through our little port in cyberspace. Case in point -- Dan and CJ, of True North Interior Design and Antiques. We knew Dan by site from going to auctions, but one day at Allegan, he came by with his lovely wife, CJ, who happened to read our blog. We've been fast friends ever since. They introduced us to a new customer, Patrice, who just opened the awesome shop pictured above, Elements, in Grand Rapids. Patrice was telling us over dinner that on her first day, a customer had come in with a gift -- an awesome metal letter "E." This customer was none other than Glenda of Junkin' in My Pink Cadillac and Mishawaka Antiques, who had found Patrice through links from our blog to Dan and CJ's! This is just one of so many examples. How fun is that?)

Allegan turned out to be an terrific show. Temperatures were high, but the humidity gave us a little break.

Sales were good in all categories.

Just Back from SoBo with Big News!

Just a few minutes in Columbus' SoBo Style presented me with a whole host of wonderful ways to be parted from some hard-earned cash. Love all Katie's new jewelry, including these

SoBo's super-cute feedsack bags also always make me smile. They were just featured in the "Crave" section of Capitol Style, Columbus' local design magazine:

But what ended up coming home with me is a secret -- something from the back room that's not even on the shelves yet!! More on that later. But on to our BIG NEWS: we've been invited to do a trunk show at SoBo in September in conjunction with the annual Country Living Fair!! I am SOOO excited. More details on this as it evolves.

Saturday we restocked at Midland, but my photos did not turn out. Must have been the heat! Did some treasure hunting on the way back for Allegan, with more to come tomorrow and Wednesday. Signs of Summer

Last week, it was time for the ancient and honorable rural tradition that brings together man, beast and carnival equipment -- the county fair. Because the rhubarb reign studio/workshop is directly across the street from the fairgrounds, we feel part of the excitement every year.

This year, even more so. My husband is worship leader for our church's band, which performed one evening:

And my son's girlfriend, Courtney, was one of 2 county-wide 10-Year Achievers. She was also runner-up for Fair Queen! Here she is pictured with her horse, Bosco, Jack and her cousin. She showed 4 of her horses during the week-long event and will be headed to the State Fair in Indy next month. We are proud of her achievements.

Small towns and county fairs just seem to fit right into the vintage lifestyle -- you can feel the connection to the past in so many whispery ways. The excitement is over for now -- the grounds are being cleaned up and the tents taken down. We are headed to Midland and Columbus this weekend. Of Heat and Television

A Midwestern/slightly southern summer can contain lots of different kinds of heat. At Sunday's Burlington (KY) Antique Show for example, there were two kinds. First, there was the "just opened the hotel door, coming out of the air conditioning, into the 'whoa, it's only 5 a.m.' swimming pool of heat." That was added to the "fry an egg on top of your head" heat that was featured at noon. The combination was the kind of hot and sticky that makes you "want to slap yo' Momma," as our friend Ricky would say. But, despite all that, the people came. And they shopped!

This was mostly due to the excitement generated by the "American Pickers" crew. The show sent a group of about 20 people, who roamed the grounds all day with their cameras. It was really interesting to watch them work. They were very friendly and quite unobtrusive. Shoppers were definitely intrigued, but everyone pretty much just went about their business. We will let you know when we hear what happens with the footage.

Sales were good across the board. Sold the Trauth table mentioned in last week's post right away, as well as our 1860s cherry chest. Original paint, paper/collage and store fixtures also did really well.

Hot is still going to be the theme of this week, as we are going to 99 by Friday. Stay inside and catch up on your old episodes of "American Pickers." Or better yet, head to an air conditioned space and do your own treasure hunting. But either way, check back later this week for an update. We are headed to Midland and Columbus this weekend. Making "History" at the Burlington Antique Show This Weekend

Our booth will be full of antique and cottage-style furniture, industrial finds, garden, containers, smalls, handmades, graphics and more. Plus we will be continuing our collage table sale and will feature the work of two new artists. And we have a fresh batch of the ever-popular hand-painted letters from Illinois artist Laura Simpson. So much good stuff!

We will also have our own little piece of Kentucky history for sale -- a parson's table used for years as a work desk by Louis Trauth Sr., founder of the popular Trauth Dairy in Newport, Ky. The historic Trauth plant is scheduled to cease production next month after more than 90 years in the dairy business. At the time of its sale to Dean Foods, Trauth Dairy was one of the oldest family-owned businesses in this part of Kentucky. The desk was purchased by Kris Kenz, my partner Joe's sister, while she worked in the plant offices. Come check it out. And wear something cute -- it may be time for your 15 minutes! We Heart Vintage Tools; Grayslake Report, Burlington Preview

My great-grandfather ran a hardware store in a small Nebraska town. I feel some errant gene was passed from Great-Grandpa Schoening to me. I love hardware stores in general (ever notice how they all smell the same when you walk in the front door?) And I adore vintage hardware and tools in particular.
Can't you just imagine the hands that used these scissors?

And cared for this beautiful folding ruler?

These old tools have a quiet grace and calm presence about them, whether made from wood or metal. Many are still usable, but we mainly love them as one-of-a-kind home accents. They always speak to me. What about you?

Grayslake was busy on Saturday and steady on Sunday. Again we appreciate the support of our regulars and were happy to see some favorite customers who haven't been able to make it to the market in a while. Today we start work on Midland and Burlington. And we have some exciting news! The History Channel has selected the Burlington Antique Market's July show to film the pilot for their newest show!! We can't wait. Vintage Paper and More: Grayslake This Weekend

Joe and I are super excited about this weekend's Grayslake Antique Market! First of all, it's time for the annual show-within-a-show, VINTAGE PAPER!! There will be tons of extra dealers for this event, plus all your regular favorites. Like getting a Venti for the price of a Tall.

In honor of this illustrious occasion, we will be having a SUPER SALE at our collage table, where you can fill a bag for one price. Plus, we have these wonderful Morris butterflies for sale for the first time. Late 1800s. Same author as the nests and eggs from earlier this year. And lots of other graphics.

Summer Reading, Plus Kane Report and Grayslake Update

I think it was Henry James who said there were no two more beautiful words in the English language than "summer afternoon." Well, I think I can do him one better with "summer reading." What about you? Don't you have to look every time you see one of those book lists? Here's what's in my stash; let's just hope there's enough afternoons!

I've started work from the bottom of the stack. "Decorate," by Holly Becker and Joanna Copestick, is lots of fun; think "Domino" magazine without the ads. "Romantic Prairie Style," Fifi O'Neill, is pretty much just that, and it features the homes of two rhubarb reign customers, Joy Waltmire and Anne Marie of NaDa Farm. "Anthology" just appeared in my mailbox, courtesy of the Anthropology website, a quarterly with yummy pictures and more text than the average shelter magazine. If the next issue is as much fun, I might just have to get a subscription!

I can't say enough good things about "State of Wonder" by Ann Patchett. Much of the narrative takes place in the Amazon jungle, where a Minnesota-based pharmacologist has been dispatched to bring her employer back details about the untimely demise of her lab partner. The drug company they both work for had sent him to find out why they had stopped getting information on the project they'd been funding for the last 20 years, which, if successful, would revolutionize human fertility. But none of that does justice to the book or the author's descriptive prowess. Highly recommended -- "Heart of Darkness" for a new generation. But don't tell me the ending! I'm not there yet. Also recommend: "Wide Awake" by Erwin Raphael McManus, especially if you need a little inspiration. That's as far as I've gotten to date. What about you? What's on your summer reading list?

Kane County was pretty decent, considering the holiday weekend and Saturday's heat. Sales were pretty evenly divided between furniture and smalls. Plus we got to see some folks we haven't in a while and go to Boyd's annual cookout -- both of which made the weekend a success! Thanks to all who came out to support the show.

Now it's on to Grayslake. I'll be headed to Starbuck's at noon for a strawberry smoothie, bag of almonds and an iced-coffee. The perfect drive-to-shopping-destinations lunch. I was planning on a long, layered, profound and witty post (ha-ha) about the weekend's Allegan Antique Market, but once again, the day has gotten away from me! So we'll just have to make do with short and sweet. So, here goes:
Weather: awesome! Customers: plentiful. Sales: brisk. Sandy and Joe: very appreciative!!

We also got to catch up with customers old and new, and some of our BFFs from Blogland and Facebook.

It was the kind of show that still makes you smile on Monday. And even Tuesday.

Road Trippin'

Summertime and road trips seem to be synonymous. And boy, have we covered a lot of ground in the last few days. Saturday, Joe and I headed down to restock our space at Midland in Indianapolis. By late afternoon, we were back on the road, headed to our favorite Columbus, Ohio, destination, SoBo Style:

Doesn't the shop look great!? All decked out for summer. But I'm getting a head of myself; we didn't get there 'til Sunday. Saturday night, Katie had an awesome little soiree on her new patio, complete with a sumptuous Indian food buffet, courtesy of her friends, Chrissy and Rolph. With a little dessert from Mom. Yum! Had a great time catching up with KP and company, with the added bonus of Brenda and Linda. What a riot.

The next morning we unloaded, then headed to Heart of Ohio where we filled two carts with goodies for Allegan. On the way there, we got a call from one of our favorite suppliers back home; as luck would have it, he was waiting for us with part of an estate. So it was Shop-Shop-Shop all the way home.

Monday, my son Jack and I headed out for our first college visit, Ball State University, located in Muncie, Indiana, about two hours away. I was really impressed with the campus -- had not been there since high school. The old part is really charming -- just check out this quote above the Fine Arts building door:

All the older buildings have that wonderful old-world feel. The newer parts of campus were also really nice -- clean, bright and really up-to-date in the tech and amenities department. Jack is interested in film, so the communications buildings were a must-see. Alum David Letterman does a lot for the school, particularly in this program area. Found out that one of my favorite authors, Havel Kimmel, is also a BSU grad. Who knew?

Heading home, we passed this awesome vintage gas station -- left from road trips gone by :

OK, I just have to say it. My Dad is awesome. The kind of dad that girlfriends all loved and boyfriends were all a little wary of. Funny. Smart. Kind. Loves babies and dogs. Horsed around with us when we were little. Set limits. Came to all our games. And plays. And pageants.

Grilled. Made big breakfasts on the weekends. Shined all the shoes on Sunday night. Moved boxes in an out of dorm rooms. Then apartments. Then houses. Always ready with a word of encouragement. Believed in our dreams. Hangs out with the grandkids. Sits on a million boards. Helps once a week at rhubarb reign inc. Let's me borrow the van all the time for treasure hunting.

Thanks, Dad, for everything! Happy Father's Day to you, Bob, Joe, and Joe's dad, Herb -- all the rhubarb dads. And to our customers, too. Know that you are loved and appreciated. On Father's Day. And every day. xo

Grayslake: What a Difference One Week Makes

Wow! What a difference just one week makes. Last weekend, we were so hot we wanted to cry; this weekend, we were wearing coats! Go figure. But it really was a lovely temperature for the market, especially Sunday.
Saturday got off to a great start with lots of furniture going to new homes during Early Buy. The Chalkboard Globes received lots of attention as well.

Unusual pieces such as this dental cabinet (which incidentally came from the estate of a sales rep in the little town where we have our studio):

Graphics, containers and chalkboards also sold well. In contrast, not one lamp sold, but last weekend, we sold every single one. You just never know. That's what keeps it exciting. Stylish Blogger Award: Many Thanks to Our Friends at Blue Cardinal! Plus a Kane County Update

Hey! Many thanks to our friends and customers, Jenn and Alison, of the Blue Cardinal, for our Stylish Blogger Award. A pat on the back is always appreciated! With the award comes the List of Seven Things, plus getting to pass the award along. I always get a kick out of doing both!

Since we've already told you seven things about ourselves and about the business, I thought I'd change it up a bit and tell you Seven Things we've learned in the 10 years since we started rhubarb reign:

1. In our vintage community, we all depend on each other; the changes and choices we make affect not just our business, but the folks we interact with as suppliers, customers, friends and colleagues.

2. Nothing lasts; as soon as you figure things out, something changes.

3. Being self-employed is not easy. You must be perseverant, as well as persistent.

4. Retail is as dependent on the weather as farming.

5. You need a support network.

6. Being successful requires risk, planning, time and hard work. But success is a relative term; you have to decide what it means to you.

7. Everyone has a mixed bag of resources to draw on -- time, talent, cash --but not in equal amounts. It is a waste of time and karma to envy someone else's stash to the extent you don't use your own.

Whew! For a while I was stuck on six, now I can think of seven more. But I'll save those for next time. So tell me what you think: what has life taught you in the last 10 years? Kane County

"Sultry" is a great word when applied to the cute dealer in the next booth. But not so much when applied to the weather at a show. It was so warm at Kane on Saturday that the floors were literally sweating. I'm not kidding! And if the floors are sweating, just imagine the people. When customers are too hot, they really just don't feel like shopping. Who can blame them? I wanted to go home, too. We were joking that we should fill the mail cart we had for sale with water and charge people for a swim. Oh, ya, then it stormed. Sunday was a better, but still kinda sticky by afternoon. And just to think, last weekend at Allegan we were wearing winter coats.

Needless to say, we appreciate EVERYONE who came out to support the show, especially given the weather. We didn't make our sales goal, but we do have $$ to put in the bank. And we got to put some of our Seven Things into practice! So tomorrow we start work on Grayslake, hoping for 70 degrees and no rain. Check back later in the week for an update. xo

Editor's Note: Many thanks to all who came out to support us at Allegan, including my husband, Bob, who was playing the part of Joe this weekend. Joe's boys were graduating, so Bob came along to help me for the first time in my 15-year -plus career. We had a great time! Thought I'd let him play guest editor today. xo

Hi I'm Bob, Sandy's husband. Nobody would know this but I once worked at Chicago's Woodfield Mall selling gourmet cookware at Williams Sonoma. The store manager hired me -- not because I knew anything about cookware -- but because she knew I'd be friendly and welcoming to all who came in. That's about the sum total of my skill set.

I do have a few other skills that Sandy values. I can go get coffee and food. I'm also really good at cleaning the undersides of old pieces of furniture and rusty metal things. That said, it was fun to go from my regular work behind-the-scenes ... and get out there where I could welcome and smile at real customers (see previous description of my skills).

Of course, I tried as much as possible never to let Sandy actually leave this booth. That would have left me all alone there... and it would have caused me to radically change all the pricing ... to declare to everyone... that everything was momentarily "free of charge" because the whole selling thing was freaking me out. Then again, having put so much "sweat equity" into rhubarb reign, I now have a better appreciation for assigning some sort of value to what we do.

I also see how demanding it is for Sandy to go through show set-up, show selling and show tear-down. And as always, it stormed and I got REALLY, REALLY WET. Then again, having a good attitude is one of my few skills. So that was okay as we huddled for like two hours in the back of rhubarb reign's trailer.

The only regret to mention here ... isn't mine. I think Sandy still regrets that I didn't work at Williams Sonoma long enough for her to score a huge employee discount on Calphalon cookware. But that's another story.

Allegan Preview and Weekend Review

Feelin' lucky? Well, we sure are! We're coming off a great weekend in Ohio, restocking at SoBo Style. An added bonus this time was an invitation to stay with Katie's folks, Dan and Mary Kay Palmer, as Katie had another commitment. We had so much fun. Mrs. Palmer made a wonderful supper, including home-made Georgia peach pie. We laughed and talked until I was tugging on Joe's sleeve, saying we had to let everyone get some sleep.

The next morning, we met Katie at the store -- check out this great set of lockers, just one of the treasures she scored at the weekend's Springfield Extravaganza:

We unloaded the van and trailer and had just enough time left for a peek at Katie's new backyard garden -- complete with pergola and raised vegetable beds. It is simply lovely! Stormy Weather: Midland and Burlington

Restocking the Midland went smoothly for us Saturday. Not a drop of rain, despite the predictions for thunderstorms all day.

Love this funky group of letters and how they work with the other pieces around them;

The original red paint on our harvest table adds just the right amount of color to this corner;

My favorite vignette consisted of two log pedestals, a group of machine gauges and a pair of fun mushroom salt and pepper shakers, all nestled on top of an industrial cart -- a great mixture of textures!

But once we were back on the highway, the rain found us. We did get the tent set up under clear skies, but once we were back the next morning, the rain was pretty much non-stop, despite the Weather Channels assertions to the contrary. In fact, we kept showing people the phone, saying "no, look, it says it's NOT raining!" Despite the damp, business was fairly steady most of the day and everyone was in a good mood.

This potting table made from an old, galvanized chicken feeder was one of my favorites and sold during early buy.

We have the good fortune to be right in front of one of the horse barns, so we can display our ephemera and other weather-sensitive pieces, rain or shine

By the end of the day, we were pretty empty! Many thanks to everyone who came out for the show. We have a conflict in June, so look for us in July and repeat after me, "rain, rain, go AWAY." Grayslake Report, New Projects, Heading South

A big thank you to everyone who came out to spend part of Mother's Day weekend with us at the Grayslake Antique Market. Things were a little different than we expected. Usually Mother's Day is one of the craziest shows of the year, but this one was more tortoise than hare. But the good, ole turtle came through for us in the end! We made our sales goal during the show's last hour. Phew!

We debuted several new handmades at this show. Our collage mushrooms sold out before I could get a photo, but I love the ones made from metal tacks even more:

These magnetic memo holders are a variation on a project we did last year, using parts from a time-card holder and a quilting frame:

The ledger paper flowers continue to sell out each week -- my mom is busy working on a new batch as we speak. We really appreciate every one's interest in the handmades. They are part of what makes rhubarb reign, rhubarb reign. Working on them is one of favorite parts of the week.

The best moment of the whole show came mid-morning Sunday when our customer, friend and show neighbor Kellie Halkitis' two boys came in with their dad to surprise her with flowers for Mother's Day. They were so excited to do something nice for their mom. Let's hope that never changes. You could hear all the other moms go 'ooohhhh..."! It was awesome. I wish had my camera out right at the moment they came. It was really something to see. Thanks, guys! You made out day.

According to Chinese tradition, 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit -- home and family, the arts, diplomacy, investments and peace keeping will rule the day! If you were born a Rabbit,* this is your lucky year.

I was born in '63, so that makes me a Rabbit. Just for fun, I decided to make rabbits my Summer Crush for 2011 -- same rules as ever apply; nothing over $10! And of course, I had to read "The Year of the Hare," by Finnish author Arto Paasilinna. It's a hoot -- "droll" is the best word I can think of to describe it. Definitely recommended.

And as my first official act of Rabbit-Luck-Sharing, I'd like to ask you to join me in supporting my friend Sherman (Mark "Sherman" Trombley, Hospitals 2 Category) in the National Culinary Competition. Sherman is a semi-finalist and needs your vote to make it to the next round, the finals in New York. The last day to vote is May 5 -- so Hop to it and click here! THE Wedding, Kane County, Vote for Sherman!

If I were not already a Francophile, I would definitely be an Anglophile. I'm not sure you can be both, as least not in one lifetime. But that isn't going to stop me from getting up early tomorrow to watch part of the royal wedding. I've got my crumpets, tea and strawberries with cream all ready to go! How 'bout you?
But I'll only be watching 'til it's time to head down to the studio. We have a GREAT load going for this weekend's Kane County Flea Market. Since the first Sunday of May falls on the 1st, the market is extra early this time. Click on the show sidebar for details.

We are working on lots of fun stuff -- garden, industrial, smalls, furniture, graphics and more. We will be featuring these wonderful journals, all made from vintage books by our awesome friend and customer, Tina Mullins, Coach House Drygoods. The journals make excellent gifts for graduation, Mother's Day, you name it. Plus you're sure to need one or two for yourself! And we've restocked our limited-addition posters, like the lovely French hot air balloon pictured below. They sold out early last month, so be sure to take a peek before they all gone!

Right now the store is strung with adorable paper pompoms in sherbet hues, like those shown in the first picture, setting the stage for Katie's TENTH ANNIVERSARY open house, coming up May 7. It's going to be a great party -- make sure you stop by!

EASTER GREETINGS

We are off this weekend for Easter. Been working on a load for Midland, which Joe and his son, Matt, will deliver tomorrow. My folks are helping finish up today, as I have a family commitment. Hope your holiday is full of Jesus, ham or lamb, vintage Easter baskets and spring flowers. But also some time for reflection.

Our pastor had a great illustration the other day. Everyone was given a small chalkboard and asked to draw a point on the left side and then a line to the middle. Put an X there. Everything to the left of the X represents the past. It is what has brought us to the present moment, but it is over. Everything to the right of the X is what's still to come. His question was this: when your line extends all the way to the right side of your board, what do you want to see when you look back? It has really had me thinking. I find that it is way too easy for me to get so distracted with work and daily tasks that that is ALL that I think about. But that is NOT what I want to see when I look back. Problem is, seeing something else requires some thought and planning. That's what I'm thinking about this Easter. What about you? What do you want to see? Let me know what you come up with. xo

Gettin' Lucky: Shopping Chicago

The May issue of Lucky Magazine has a four-page spread about Chicago shoppin'! Some of my old favorites are there-- Merz Apothecary, P.O.S.H., Robin Richmond -- but there are lots of new places that look amazing! Asrai Gardens, Renegade Handmade and Roslyn among them.

Sigh. I can't believe I've been gone for 10 years. I do miss the shopping. Maybe it's time to organize a field trip. (: Glad to see customer Julie Fernstrom's Brimfield mentioned, too. Check the issue out!

Got distracted yesterday and forgot to take photos of this week's finds; will do for next week. Tomorrow, we are off to Ohio. For those in Chicago, check out Zurko's Civil War Collectors show and sale Saturday at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the war; would be an awesome way to show kids who are studying the war era in school some actual artifacts. Grayslake: WOW!

Thanks to everyone who came out to support the Grayslake Antique Market this weekend -- there was a record crowd and lots of excitement in the air! I always want to take pictures before the show opens, but there never seems to be enough time. We were pleasantly surprise, though, to find that by Sunday afternoon, we were somewhat unintentionally color-coordinated in what was still available to be photographed! Serendipity for sure!

We really enjoyed catching up on every one's news and were especially excited to learn that our client Larry Vodak, of Chicago's Scout, had just finished the design house exhibit for the Museum of Science and Industry. Way to go, Larry! We're actually headed over there later this month, so I'll be sure to get photos to share.

Team rhubarb is headed to Ohio this weekend, and I'm out the door as we speak to shop. Check back later this week for information on Zurko's Civil War show, a peek at what we've found, and some Chicago shopping news. xo

Paper Roses

We've had a love affair with handmade paper flowers for the last several years. They started appearing in catalogs, such as Garnet Hill and Anthropologie, in magazines like Somerset Life, and in the booths of talented flea market-istas, such as JoAn Babb and CJ Zondervan. So pretty! Kits are available from retailers, like as the PaperSource, or you can make yourself a batch from scratch. CJ taught me to make the ones pictured above. Make a square template of desired size, then trace and cut tissue paper. Stack 6 sheets per flower and accordion-fold. Wrap the center with thin wire and unfold toward the middle. Voila! Finis. We attached ours to twigs, but you can use pipe cleaners or whatever else inspires you.

To make these guys, we used a vintage metal flower to create a template. Next we traced the pattern on to ledger paper. Cut out and place a dot of glue in the center -- three sheets of paper to one flower. Large glass bubbles were used to create the centers. Pick a graphic you like, trace bubble and glue to back using ModPodge. Attach to flower center using Tacky Glue and allow to dry. We used vintage wires for the stems this time, but again you can use your imagination. Fill a vase today!

Last year, Joe and I contracted with a Chicago company to produce limited-edition, archival enlargements from our collection of vintage prints and graphics. Newsflash: Spring is NOT Hiding in Indy or Ohio Either

We took the show on the road this weekend, visiting two of our favorite places, SoBo Style in Columbus, Ohio, and Midland Arts and Antiques in Indianapolis. While the sun followed us, warm temperatures did not. The wind still had that sharp, lion's edge, even though the lamb surely can't be far behind. But SoBo never disappoints -- the shop is totally decked out for spring. Check out these adorable bags by Hedy Regal; so cute with a spring outfit: This glass-door bookcase was my favorite find in our load for Katie this time; won't it be cute in some one's house, full of books or other treasures:

On Saturday, we restocked our booth at Midland. The joint was hoppin'! I loved how the blues worked together in this corner:

You Just Never Know

"Hey, Mama, look! A sale! You just never know what you are going to find." Whenever my son would say this from his car seat, I would have to smile. How many times had he heard this coming from the front seat? The thrill of the hunt is what drives a lot of people in this business. You just never know what's going to turn up.

Case in point: two of our favorite Chicago customers, Bill and Janet McCarthy, found this wonderful Montgomery Hawthorne messenger bike at a local estate sale that they happened upon one weekend while headed somewhere else.

Look at the wonderful details -- heart-shaped gears and leather seat included. Very steampunk! Can't you just see the original rider, tearing down a country road with goggles on and coat tails flapping? Awesome.

Good News and Thank Yous

Just wanted to say a quick THANK YOU to everyone who supported the Wheaton (IL) Antique Market this season. As you may remember, a scheduling conflict two years ago forced the show to move to Saturdays from its 40-year run as a third Sunday show.

While this may not seem like a big deal, any time a show moves or changes dates, attendance and dealer counts suffer. Think of it like a shopping ecosystem -- one changes causes another, and before too long, you can be on the road to extinction. But the show definitely made a come-back this year, and we really appreciate every one's help in making that possible.

So, here's the good news, part two: Zurkos are continuing the HALF-OFF GENERAL ADMISSION discount for the foreseeable future! We'll keep reminding you -- just keep coming!

Great New Finds for Last Wheaton of the Season

Spring Handmades; Grayslake Report

I'm addicted to Martha Stewart's white-gold glitter -- I love its tarnished look. We used it to coat these vintage bunnies we bought from our dealer pal, Mark McKee. Dressed up with some old silver-foil flowers, hand-dyed silk ribbon and dainty tinsel, they are ready to take center stage for your Easter parade!

One tip we've discovered with using any kind of glitter is to coat it with a light covering of Mod Podge once it has dried. This helps to keep the glitter on the project and not all over everything else!

Love these paper magnolias which we made from a Paper-Source kit, then tweaked with a little excelsior. They look so pretty tossed in any spring container.

Just one more to share today -- have lots more planned for the season. These vintage frames were filled with copies made from antique Easter graphics, enhanced with some sweet old millinery flowers. Great for a spring vignette.

We featured these and many other spring projects at last weekend's Grayslake Antique Market. It was an awesome show. Our thanks to all who came out. Despite the less than spectacular weather, things were hopping at the Season Opener for the Kane County Flea Market. Sales were brisk across the board, from painted furniture:

There was no real clear "winner"! It was great to see so many of our regulars, as well as customers from Michigan and Indiana. Many thanks to all who came out to support the show. Overall, we felt the opener didn't have the knock down, drag out/shop-til-you-drop excitement that it has for the last couple of years; B+, but not an A. But still we were happy to be back in our usual spot.

Paper Roses

Whew! What a busy weekend. Originally, we had planned to stop at Midland on the way to Ohio, but just plain ran out of time. So we changed the plan -- head to Ohio Saturday afternoon, unload at Katie's Sunday morning, drive like crazy people back to Indy to restock Midland, plus squeeze in some shopping for inventory and supplies. Yikes.

We made all our stops, but were ready for some R&R today! SoBo looked great -- Katie is definitely getting her spring on. Love these wonderful paper roses she found. Hope they will be followed by weather warm enough to grow real ones soon.

Is it just me or has this winter been tougher than most in recent memory? I'm totally ready for spring. Check back later this week to see what we have up our sleeves for Kane -- we'll be getting our spring on! Let's hope we get some weekend weather to match. xo

A Little More Bill and Gosia: Architectural Anarchy

Field Trip: From A to Z; Wheaton Report

Sunday, after the Wheaton Antique Market, Joe and I headed to Chicago's fabled South Side for a visit with two of our favorite clients, Gosia Korsakowski and Bill Rawski. Separately, Gosia owns Blue Bell Bazaar, a hugely popular etsy site, and Bill, ZAP, the largest movie prop house between New York and LA. If that weren't enough, they joined forces two years ago and in November opened Architectural Anarchy, a gorgeous retail outlet. But I won't even get to that until a later post.

First, take a peek at their first "curatorial project realization," a museum-like exhibit at 205 S. State in the heart of Chicago's Loop, done in conjunction with the Chicago Urban Art Society.

While everything is discretely for sale, the presentation begs that you stop and consider each collection of objects for its beauty of form. Gosia said that the non-traditional setting and location, plus the fact that objects are for sale, have challenged a lot of visitors' conceptions about "museums."

Joe and I had fun playing "Where's rhubarb?" (our version of "Where's Waldo?), quietly searching for items we've sold amongst all the treasures. Here's Joe and Gosia after finding a couple!

Next stop on the tour -- ZAP, Bill's multi-story prop house in an old factory district. Stepping inside is like falling down the rabbit hole. Everywhere you turn, it is well-organized chaos -- a visual catalog of the last 200 years.

Bill's business includes renting props to movies, businesses and private clients for events like weddings or photo shoots. The warehouse also includes separate spaces dedicated to his restaurant decorating clients, restoration/repair/re-creation ventures, and Architectural Anarchy, the shop he shares with Gosia.

There's no way a couple of photos do ZAP justice.

Imagine this -- one row -- times fifty. Literally amazing! Check back later to see more of Bill and Gosia.

Wheaton Report

The show was a good one, kind of quiet starting out, but then fairly steadily busy until about the last hour. Industrial, projects and painted furniture were our best sellers, although garden held its own. Many thanks to all who came out to support the show. I know it's a little late, but HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY from rhubarb reign! Valentine's Day is one of my favorite holidays, mainly because it's so uncomplicated, at least compared to Christmas. That always feels like a marathon, while V-Day is just a walk in the park.

But we love making projects for both. The challenge for February is to make an item special enough for the holiday, but with broad enough appeal it can be left out year-round. Color is key in doing just that. Here are a few examples of what we came up with, starting with the photoholders pictured above.*

Add to that our altered-art trophies and heart-shaped magnets;

as well as these collaged candy tins. Sweet!

Grayslake (where these pictures were taken) was a great show -- thanks to all who came out to support it! Garden was hands-down the biggest seller, followed by industrial and then smalls. Guess mid-30s felt like spring, compared to the single digits earlier in the week.

What's in a Name? Plus Expo Report

People often ask us about the business' name, and I usually tell them to hold on to their hats, it's a long story. When I lived in Chicago, my business had a different name. It was one I never particularly liked. Not so much because it was a bad one, but rather because the name I really wanted was already taken in the state of Illinois.

When I moved back to Indiana, I jumped on the chance to re-christen, but to what exactly I wasn't sure. I liked the idea of rhubarb as a business icon -- it is versatile, tough, kind of quirky and quintessentially Midwestern. Plus my grandma and my mom always grew it in their gardens, so it has a lot of happy associations for me. But "rhubarb" just sounded a little lonely all by itself. My girlfriends and I were kicking it around one day, and they came up with the name "Rhubarb Road." I thought that sounded a little too country, but I liked the alliteration of the 2 rs. Then inspiration struck! I'd seen the logo of a make-up company, which employed a small crown. Rhubarb Reign! Eureka. We could keep the two rs and add crown as our logo. We switched to lower case and the job was done. Joe liked the name once we started working together -- and now its been "rhubarb reign inc" for almost 10 years!

Expo Report

Many thanks to all who came out for the Expo Show -- it was our best to date for that venue! We can't thank you enough for your support. While we sold more furniture than usual for this event, it was the smalls that carried the day. We're headed out now to restock, but take a look at two cuties that I picked up at the Expo for myself:

And a Little Panache

While you're in St. Charles, be sure to check out one of my favorite shops, Panache. Started in 1998 by our friend and customer, interior designer Cheryl Herman, Panache was originally envisioned as a home store offering design services. However, customers were soon begging Cheryl to also carry clothes, because they loved her wonderful, Bohemian style. Panache has since evolved into a lifestyle store, offering home accessories, antiques, clothing, jewelry and more.

"My customer age group is broad," said Cheryl. "I once had a woman who was in her 80s buy a hip, Free People jacket. She was in the store with her daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter. It was cool; four generations and they all encouraged her to purchase the jacket. She was awesome."

Cheryl added that her bestsellers include antiques, handmades, Sid Dickens tiles, rugs and lighting. New for spring will be organic textiles, earthy colors, texture, vintage jewelry and interesting lights.

"I think my boutique is different because it incorporates interior design with apparel and accessories. It has an eclectic feel, mixing rustic with elegance. 'Panache' means 'elegance and style' in French!"

Panache is located at 210 Cedar Avenue; telephone 630-587-1090. Winter hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 to 5.

As for the storm of the century, the first flakes are just falling as I'm writing this, but we heard about it all weekend. It was a topic of conversation in Indianapolis at Midland, where we used this funky group of frames to fill up an otherwise empty wall:

And all over Ohio -- at gas stations, restaurants and hotels, everyone was speculating. We did get a little break from it Sunday when we unloaded at our customer Denise Griffith's sweet little shop, Feather Your Nest, in Pickerington. Not a snowflake in site, plus we had lots to catch up on since we last got together at Burlington. And all the bright, cheerful colors in Denise's store overcome any thoughts of winter weather. Just check out the fabric room:

Denise offers a regular schedule of sewing classes, which are held in a large, bright workroom upstairs. All the fabric, patterns and trim made me want to race home to get out my machine. The fabrics' sunny colors echo throughout the store, from an entire room full of Vera Bradley bags and accessories:

to the front room, where the walls were just painted a fabulous chartreuse to complement the curtains Denise made from a lovely new Amy Butler print:

With all that luscious color, it's hard to think about snow. But once we were back on the road, everyone was back to talking about the storm. At Heart of Ohio, and then again at dinner, it was on every one's lips. So Joe and I did some strategizing; decided to shop on Monday, our usual day off, thinking the auction prospects might be a little grim Wednesday, and work today, thinking we might not even be able to get to the studio tomorrow. Who knows! My theory is that weather likes to sneak up on you; it's just not as much for it if you're prepared. And prepared we are! We have a whole new group of smalls, projects and furniture to share with you this weekend. So do plan to join us. And don't worry, we'll have you home in plenty of time for the kick-off! xo

Write On!

Over the last couple of weeks, we've talked with several people who are interested in submitting their artwork to Somerset. If you've been thinking about it, too, we want to encourage you to give it a try. The folks at Somerset are awesome to work with -- really helpful and encouraging.

If you're not a writer or photographer, don't worry. The have staff people to help. The most important thing is to get your artwork out there for them to see. Friend and customer Candy Martens, Artisan's Ball and frequent Somerset contributor, encouraged us to give it a try several years ago. Her advice was simple: send the actual artwork, if at all possible, and if it's your first time, go for one of their challenges/calls. These categories are listed both on-line and in the back of each issue. So don't delay! Check it out and let me know if there are questions we can answer.

Resolutions

I've never been very good at making or keeping New Year's resolutions. But I love the idea of the new year -- a fresh start, big plans, new projects. So I actually look forward to writing the business' goals for the year. Yes, I am that geeky. But I find that having a list of things to accomplish really helps keep me focused and moving forward -- otherwise I want to do and try EVERYTHING! This year, it's a given that we'll look forward to working with our awesome customers, such as Katie Palmer of SoBo Style in Columbus, Ohio:

Katie's a great fit for us because her look includes both cozy cottage-style furniture, like this pretty 5-drawer dresser with unusual built-in jewelry boxes,:

and items artfully crafted by artisans near and far, like these awesome lamps by Ohio's Claudia Curry, rebuilt from vintage elements and industrial finds:

They make my heart sing! I'm also excited about continuing to explore unusual combinations of found objects, mixed media and industrial finds. The new issue of Marie Claires Idees is chock full of all three:

I can sometimes find this magazine at Barnes and Noble, but it tends to be a little elusive. Amazon has made subscribing to foreign magazines so much easier, so I took the plunge last year and signed up. I've enjoyed each issue that has arrived in my mailbox -- straight from Paris to small-town Indiana. You gotta love it!

I'm also thinking we'll try to incorporate more natural wood and original paint into the mix:

Wheaton Report

Many thanks to all who came out for the Wheaton Antique Market this past weekend. There was a great crowd! We sold most of our furniture and lots of the new smalls our shopping expeditions had turned up. We'll be off for two weeks now, seeing store clients, but will be back to Chicago the first weekend in February. Check back later this week for a look at some of our Chicago clients who are in the news right now.

And speaking of the "news," did you see the new issue of Lucky Magazine? I'm totally intrigued by the leather dye that's featured. Has anyone tried it? I wonder if it looks as good in real life as it does in the magazine...think I might have to give it a whirl! xo

Just before Christmas, long-time Illinois customer and antique dealer extraordinaire Karen Hill and I were chatting about the concrete deer she had bought from us several months earlier. At the time of purchase, we had joke about its heftiness and how long it would take to get the outdoor charmer installed inside. She was following up, letting me know he'd made it into the living room and was now all dolled up for the holidays. He sounded so cute, I had to ask if she would mind sending me a photo:

And once I got it, another thought occurred to me. (Yes, I'm a little slow on the uptake!) I bet all you guys -- my blogging friends -- would get a kick out of seeing these finds in their awesome new surroundings. So I double-checked with Karen to get the go-ahead, and now you too can see the "dear deer" in her lovely living room! I'm sure he feels right at home with Karen's other treasures, some of which were featured last year in this Daily Herald article (wrinkles courtesy of my filing system):

Another Illinois customer Laura Wenzel also shared a photo with me of this cute red seed spreader she'd purchased from us, then repurposed as a container for seasonal greens on her front porch. Awesome!
